Talita's Stavanger Major withdrawal in her own words
Brazilian beach volleyball star Talita Antunes shocked fans and opponents alike when she and her partner Larissa Franca – on a six-event winning streak including the Swatch Major Series premiere in Poreč, Croatia – withdrew from the Stavanger Major just before the start of Main Draw play. Here, in her own words, is what happened.
Talita, when did you decide to withdraw from the Stavanger Major?
On Tuesday, after I went to see a doctor.
And what happened?
I felt something in my right quadriceps last week in Poreč, and then we came to Stavanger and figured we had three days – Sunday, Monday and Tuesday – to rest and see how it felt. I got to a doctor here and we decided not to play this one.
How bad is it?
It's not a major injury. I could play, but the doctor said my leg wasn't 100 percent, and I didn't feel 100 percent. It's not good to play so much when you're not 100 percent, and given that we've got a lot of tournaments in a row, and it's cold here, we decided to stop at this one and play Saint Petersburg [Grand Slam in the USA] and the next. We'd played through the finals in two tournaments that were so hard, in Moscow, and in Croatia where it was so hot, and we've had six good results in a row, so we decided it's better to wait.
Speaking of Poreč, just a week ago, how was that tournament for you?
It was good! As I said, it was hot, but I do prefer it when it's hot. I really liked the tournament and I think we played our absolute best beach volleyball there.
Are you staying around Stavanger until the end of the tournament?
I'm watching all the players, all the matches. I rest my body only, not my mind. It's not great just to watch – I'd rather be inside the court and playing, but when we are out I watch and think and see for the next tournament.
